picture collection: “light”

After perusing the Mid-Manhattan Library Picture Collection i found these in a folder simply labeled “light”.

Salons de Barcelona

I found this book at an outdoor market in Barcelona in 2007. Copyright 1984, all drawings by Aurora Altisent.

Bringing home the kill

I used these photographs about 6 years ago for a mock-up book on hunting. I wasn’t able to take the originals out of the library in order to scan them so i could only use the photocopier. This high contrast effect make the images of the hunters even more intense. The name of the photographer is nowhere to be found on any of these old copies, but i intend to find it and properly credit . . .

chatuchak market, the most recent findings

Chatuchak market or JJ market is always oppressively hot and usually cramped with people, but challenges aside it is still one of my favorite spots in Bangkok. I had never been to the used books section in the far back corner of this HUGE market, but once I got there I knew I would be leaving with pile of paperbacks in my bag. Above are some my favorites out of everything I picked up. The last time I was there was late March of this year, a few weeks before the red shirts descended on the capital and decided to stay for over a month.

small treasures

I am presently in my parents attic surrounded by all my possessions and playing the “keep, store, toss” game. After going through everything I’ve ever owned, throwing most of it away and then selling some . . . i’ve found a few small gems that have no category really but are just too good to discard and must be archived.

Manh Hai’s extensive photo collection

My palĀ Josh recently introduced me to Manh Hai’s collection of photographs, postcards and record covers from pre-war Vietnam. The collection is immense and awe-inspiring in its depth and variety. Above are some of my favorites.

rsvp to 1980

Commercial photography from 1980. Courtesy of the David Wenzel / Brendan Wenzel basement, definitely planning a trip to dig for more.

books on plants

I’m just starting to post the beginnings of a scanning binge that has lasted over a month. These scans are courtesy of the Wenzel library. David Wenzel has an incredible collection of books and national geographic magazines in the basement of his home. Brendan Wenzel and I have barely scratched the surface of all of the hidden treasures down there . . . more scans to come.

book of students?

I found this booklet of portraits in the back of a used bookstore, i think they may be students.

paper pack bought at the market

All of these came in a plastic pack and sold at the same stall as incense, paper clothing (for burning), candles, etc. Its printed on very delicate cheap newsprint type of paper – maybe this is for burning too? It could also used for lunar new year . . . but i have to research this further. My favorite is the last smaller piece showing a herd of hilariously expressive farm animals. Click for a closer look.
